"Amaterasu"
slumped glass bottles, concrete, rope 30" x 40" x 20"
Japan, 8th century
The story of Amaterasu Omikami,
The Great-Goddess-Spirit-Shining-In-Heaven
Was told during Byzantine treachery
And Viking battles while
The Inca perched Machu Picchu.
The power of Amaterasu
The creatrix goddess of the sun
Was challenged by Susanoo
Her brother the moon.
He ruined rice paddies and
Smeared excrement on her temples.
Outraged and refusing such a demeaning fight,
She secluded herself in a cave.
The world was dark.
A polished bronze mirror
Was propped before the cave
And erotic dancing aroused her curiosity.
When she looked to see the dancers,
She abandoned her isolation
Dazzled by her own brilliant reflection.
Later we packaged that power
In desert test blastss that flashed the sand to glass
And photo-fixed human shadows
On the concrete of her industrial cities.
