"Mawu"
concrete and steel 30" x 40" x 20"

West Africa, 17th century

Mawu made all mountains, rivers, and animals
Riding in the mouth of a giant serpent.
Seeing that it was heavy, she sent the serpent
Under the Earth to curl up and support it.
The Sekpoli, or soul, was a part of Mawu in everyone.
Boastful Awe challenged Mawu by
climbing to the jungle of heaven,
Where he cut down a tree and carved a person,
But could not breath life into it.
Mawu fed Awe a meal containing the seed of death,
And he brought mortality back to Earth.
Stealing her people for slavery
Initiated hatreds lasting centuries,
And ignites the urban violence of race riots.
